Wednesdays, Year 3, Week 1
With this new post, I start year three of blogging. When I first started posting, it was on a mobile smart phone, which I finally replaced with a real, honest to god computer. Thankfully, I am finally getting the hang of this new fangled gadget, so now the posts should be a little closer together! Don't let anyone tell you that an old cat can't learn new tricks, I'm living proof that they can, albeit a little slower than in days gone by!
We had a really nice day weatherwise today, after the weird storm on Tuesday it seemed super nice. I have started making my own bird feeding blocks, the ones you buy are almost all crappy seed with a lot of filler, so making them just seemed to be better for the birds. They sure eat them faster! I use old plastic mushroom containers for the mold, and here's what I mix together to fill them with: melt a half pound of lard, real lard not crisco, a half a small jar of cheap peanut butter, two pounds of corn grits, and about 5 pounds of wild bird seed with sunflower seeds mixed in. Put the dry ingredients in a plastic tub, mix well, then add the melted lard and peanut butter, then mix some more. Portion it into the plastic molds and tap it down to make a cake, chill to harden, then unmold to feed the birds. You can even just make one huge block and place it on the ground and the birds will find it! The little buggers have a sixth sense when it comes to peanut butter and lard, they can smell it immediately!
I walked through my garden area today, it is having a nice rest for the rest of fall and winter. I like to plan ahead and decide what to plant and where to plant it to follow good rotation of crops, so each time I look at all the beds, it gives me new ideas too. I have been building up a corner of the back part with a compost pile and decided to use all my old branches and dry leaves to construct a tiny mountain on top of which I'll plant sweet peas and let them cover the mound. It sounds strange, but I'm sure it will end up looking cool. By the time next summer comes, I plan to post pictures on this blog and show you just what I'm doing. More new tricks for this old cat!
Well, that's it for today...stay warm and happy...I'm happiest when I'm in the garden, or planning one!
